RGI released a number of celebrity endorsed statistical replay
sports games during the late 60's and early 70's. They
included the VINCE LOMBARDI FOOTBALL GAME, THE FRAN TARKENTON FOOTBALL
GAME, the OSCAR ROBERTSON PRO BASKETBALL STRATEGY GAME, the GIL HODGES
PENNANT FEVER BASEBALL GAME, JACKIE STEWART RACING GAME and ROCKY
GRAZIANO BOXING GAME.
In the early 1970's the company evidently decided that the fees involved in getting the rights to use the names of real players and teams was too high and they switched to much simpler versions of their games. There are no player or team stats involved in these. These games were released under the "PLAY THE PROS MONIKER".
From that point the story gets more complicated. I have found variations on the games being sold by a company called Athol Research and by a company called Sports Games Company. Both of these companies are based out of NY/NJ area. The games sold by these companies are all similar to the "Play The Pros" series - no real players or teams. None of these later games have player endorsements.
This particular game is a very simple basketball game based on an even more simplified version of the Original OSCAR ROBERTSON Game. The player picks the area of the court he wishes to move to and rolls a single die to determine the result. He than has the option to either shoot or continue moving around the court. There is the danger of a steal and a fast break with the chances being higher depending on the area of the court or length of shot. Due to it's simplicity the game actually flows really nicely and I had a good time playing it for awhile. Probably a good game to play with a younger fan.
The game parts are in EXCELLENT condition. It is 100% complete with all necessary game parts accounted for. It appears that the game was played with a couple times and put aside. The field was cut too large to fit in the box but it will flatten out if you put something heavy on it for a time. Overall I would grade the game parts 7-8 on a 10 scale (see condition guide below).
The game box is in EXCELLENT condition. It has some creasing near the right side and some dishing but otherwise nice shape. No stains or writing. No splits. I would grade it a 7 on a 10 scale (see condition guide below).
MINT (10): I will only give this grade to brand new, unused items. NEAR MINT (9): Shows virtually no use. Seldom if ever played. Perhaps some very light handling creases to the instructions or other minor flaws with the game parts. Boxes will have only the slightest hint of shelf wear. EXCELLENT (7-8): The game has seen some use but it was obviously well taken care of. Game parts might have some light handling creases or other signs of careful use. Board might have just a hint of color loss or dented corners. Boxes will have light rubbing to the artwork or perhaps some minor dishing or a very light stain. VERY GOOD (5-6): The game was not especially well cared for but it still has faired pretty well. Game parts will show obvious use but nothing will be torn, badly stained or have any serious damage. Box may have some rubbing, light staining, dishing, 1 or 2 neatly split corners, minor writing and/or a few pieces of tape. No major structural damage and artwork will still be generally attractive. GOOD (3-4): Obviously no care was taken with the game but it is still playable as is. Game parts show considerable use but the game is complete with all parts in usable condition. Box may have staining, writing, split corners, dishing and/or other structural damage but it will be intact and still usable. POOR (1-2): Only suitable to fill a space in your collection. Game will be missing parts (these will be noted). Box will have serious damage and may be missing aprons or badly torn.
